What is the difference between counseling and consultation?

Counseling or psychotherapy is focused on treating mental health conditions through a collaborative relationship and use of specific therapeutic strategies. The practice of psychotherapy is limited in location by a state license and services may be reimbursable by medical insurance.

Consultation draws upon the expertise of the consultant to create solutions for a specific, typically short term, problem or concern identified by the consultee. This is not a licensed activity, does not focus on the treatment of mental illness, and is not reimbursable by medical insurance.

What is a mental health assessment?

This is an approximately one hour interview which will inform you (in most cases) if you qualify for a mental health diagnosis. This will include our recommendations for treatment options. (For Laura’s clients, this may include medication recommendations.)
